يمكن لآلة صنع النشا المعدل لحفر النفط إنتاج النشا المشوه (Denatured Starch). النشا المُسبق الجيلاتين هو عامل فعال واقتصادي لفقدان السوائل في سوائل الحفر ذات الأساس المائي، وهو مشتق من النشا. لا يتعرض للتدهور البكتيري عند درجة حرارة 120°م. وهو مقبول بيئيًا وغير سام. ينتج النشا المعدل كعكة ترشيح رقيقة وناعمة ومتينة، ويعزز معدلات اختراق أسرع مع تقليل الاحتكاك. يمكن استخدامه في جميع أنواع أنظمة سوائل الحفر. كما يُطلق على النشا المُسبق الجيلاتين أحيانًا "مُسبق الجيلاتين" لتسهيل ذوبانه أثناء تصنيع المنتج. يُستخدم النشا المعدل على نطاق واسع في صناعات حفر النفط والمنسوجات والورق والأغذية.
